Just days before David Carruthers was to be sentenced for accepting illegal online sports bets, he has withdrawn his guilty plea.
Carruthers, formerly chief executive of Betonsports, was arrested three years ago by US authorities. He was apprehended while transferring planes at the Dallas airport on a flight from Britain to Costa Rica.
The American government charges that the Scottish businessman’s involvement with BOS broke US law as the company accepted illegal bets from American citizens.
Since 2006, Carruthers has been under house arrest in Missouri, and has garnered a huge amount of attention from the press. His arrest made international headlines when many accused the US of judicial over-reach in his case.
However, the high profile case seemed to be wrapping up in April after Carruthers plead guilty to the charges. He accepted a deal from prosecutors that would have seen him receive 33 months in prison.
But just days before the sentencing was to occur, Caruthers apparently had a change of heart. Now that his guilty plea has been withdrawn, no one is sure what’s going to happen.
The other BOS executives who entered guilty pleas are all expected to go through with their sentencing, including BOS founder Gary Kaplan.
