BetonSports founder Gary Kaplan isn’t the only member of his family in trouble with the law. Kaplan’s brother and sister, Neil Scott Kaplan, 43 and Lori Beth Kaplan-Muntz, 48 have both plead guilty to felony racketeering and conspiracy charges related to their time as employees of BetonSports.
As a part of their plea they’ve both agreed to turn in millions in gambling profits. However, many are wondering where they’ll come up with the money. Neither was reportedly paid very well during their time at the company, with both simply acting as supervising employees. Neil actually left the company years before the indictments were even handed down.
Kaplan’s long time accountant Penelope Ann Tucker, 64 was also charged. Tucker worked as Kaplan’s accountant for years and has plead guilty to felony charges related to online gaming. She’s agreed to turn over money held in Swiss bank accounts linked to her earnings at BetonSports.
Kaplan’s guilty plea was surprising to many as she was not named in the first BetonSports indictment in July 2006.
These charges come after a federal grand jury handed down an indictment against Kaplan, BetonSports CEO David Carruthers, some company executives and a few lower level employees. Three individuals who ran a separate marketing and promotions firms that worked closely with the company were also charged.
