If Phil Ivey doesn’t slow down on the poker circuit, he’s going to reach all of his career goals before he hits middle age.
After winning his seventh gold bracelet, he’s now one step closer to his personal goal of 35 bracelets before he retires. According to Ivey he’s also ‘one closer to Eric Sedel’. Sedel is ranked fifth on the all time WSOP wins list, just one position above Ivey.
Ivey won his seventh WSOP bracelet (and second this year) in Event 25, the $2500 Omaha High-Low/Seven-Card Stud High-Low split tournament. He beat 376 players to win the first place prize of $220,538.
He’s coming on strong this year after walking away from last year’s WSOP empty handed.
Before that poor showing, Ivey had skipped a few years saying “I didn’t play in as many tournaments as I used to because I figured, it doesn’t really make much difference. But then, as I started getting older I started to realize this does matter. Winning bracelets, it does matter. Just having the chance to put myself in poker history. I know I have the chance to win and be the all-time bracelet leader if I can continue at this pace.”
Ivey feels confident that he’s now a better tournament player saying:
“I think I’m a little more patient. I take my time. I’m trying in every pot. I’m trying to stay focused and recognize that every pot does matter. I think (before) I was making major mistakes than ended up costing me the tournament. This year I am not making as many mistakes." Now that he’s back on the tournament track, Ivey has no plans to slow down. Asked when he planned to win his next bracelet Ivey quickly replied “Tomorrow.”
