Phil Ivey has always been incredibly publicity shy, especially compared to some of the other poker pro’s on the circuit. He doesn’t give out any information about his personal life and he rarely grants interviews. He’s said that he really prefers to keep to himself and do his own thing.
However, in the interviews that he does grant, he gives out some great quotes. For example, he once claimed that he could win 30 gold bracelets by the time he retired from the pro circuit.
While Ivey has certainly been achieving major success in the poker world, many people doubted he’d hit the 30-bracelet mark. Especially considering that he hadn’t won a WSOP bracelet since 2005, the year he made the claim.
However, he’s just come one step closer to his goal. Ivey took home another gold bracelet at the WSOP’s $2500 Deuce-to-Seven No-Limit Lowball event. Ivey defeated John Monnette at the final table to win after nearly six hours of heads up play.
Ivey says that winning the $96,361 first place prize wasn’t easy. In a rare interview he said “It was a grueling event. When we got heads-up, we played a long time…I did not expect it to last that long…It was a tough final table. I don't play that much Deuce, so I am pretty proud that I won a bracelet in this event since I had not won this game before. It really means a lot.” This is Ivey’s sixth career bracelet, making his goal 20% complete. Considering that Ivey’s only 32, I’d say it’s a pretty good bet that he’ll actually do this.
