After receiving criticism for his comments against Las Vegas conventions, President Obama made a surprise visit to the city.
The president’s comments, targeting corporate conventions in Vegas, were meant to defend the stimulus package. The president said that companies getting bailouts shouldn’t buy corporate jets or go to Vegas or the Superbowl on the taxpayer’s dime.
While the man had a point, many, including Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, have said that the president should apologize and retract his statement. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has already reported more than 400 cancelled Las Vegas conventions and meetings, costing the local economy over $100 million.
Las Vegas Governor, Jim Gibbons, is refusing to meet with the president during his trip. Instead he’s demanding an apology.
The president appears interested in no such thing. However, when he stepped off Air Force One in Las Vegas, Obama was greeted by none other than Mayor Goodman himself.
Goodman seems to be pleased with Obama’s proclamation that there’s nothing like a quick midweek trip to Vegas. In his Sin City speech on Wednesday, the president singled out the city’s unique sites and sounds, his comments drawing cheers and applause.
So far so good, and I’m sure he’ll be back in the governor’s good books in no time. How can anyone resist that charm?
